The City of Tomah Police Department’s Field Training Program consists of 17 weeks of intense training, exposing the new officer to a variety of calls for service and tactics with the goal of producing a well-rounded, self sufficient and successful officer.  The Field Training Unit is comprised of four officers and one supervisor, all of whom are committed at getting the best out of the new officers hired by the department.

The training program is broken into four phases, with the new officer being assigned to a Field Training Officer (FTO) each phase.  During the phases, training sessions are conducted that focus on calls for service that are extremely complex or high risk in nature.  Upon successful completion of the first four steps of the field training program, the new officer is then approved for solo patrol within the community.
