K-9 Unit

Collage of Tomah K9's

The Tomah Police Department K-9 Program currently consists of one dual-purpose K-9 team and one Therapy K-9 in training. The dual purpose K-9 team consists of Sergeant Adam Perkins and K-9 Aron MoH Viktor, a.k.a “Viktor”. The Therapy K-9 team consists of Sergeant Delaney Goodenough and K-9 “Ruby”.

Ruby is an Australian Labradoodle and has been partnered with Sergeant Goodenough as her handler since September 2021. Ruby has successfully completed several obedience training courses and is a certified therapy dog through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs. Her primary role is to enhance department morale, alleviate anxiety and fear in both children and adults during calls for service, and contribute to community relations and events. Ruby is known for being loving, affectionate, and sweet. She was generously donated to the Tomah Police Department by Blueberry Cottage Labradoodles, located near Osseo, Wisconsin. Her veterinary care, grooming, and food are made possible through donations from the community.

Viktor is a Czech Shepherd and has been with Sergeant Perkins since March of 2017. Viktor was born in the Czech Republic and was selected as a Police K-9 candidate by our trainer at Jessiffany Kennels in Iron Ridge, WI. Sergeant Perkins met with the trainer and several other K-9’s before selecting Viktor as his partner. They then went through a vigorous 5-week training course to become a certified Police K-9 Team. Viktor is a dual purpose K-9, which means he is trained in Narcotics detection (Methamphetamine, Heroin, Cocaine and Marijuana), tracking, article searches, handler protection and area/building searches.  Viktor is also often utilized in the community through school and special group presentations.

Viktor was funded through a generous donation to honor “Medal of Honor” (MoH) recipient Kenneth E. Stumpf. To further honor Kenneth Stumpf, Viktor’s given name of “Aron Viktor” was changed to “Aron MoH Viktor”. The donation was large enough to purchase Viktor, the initial training and to assist with a portion of the new K-9 squad purchase in 2019.

The K-9 program is fully funded through donations from the Community. These donations go towards the continued training every K-9 team requires, the purchase of new K-9’s, outfitting squads with equipment to keep the K-9 safe, veterinary care, food and any/all K-9 related expenses.
